A series of engaging workshops led by local industry professionals in the areas of arts, media, and technology. Lagniappe workshops are designed to teach and develop media skills through hands-on instruction, interactive demonstrations, and lots of creative discussion. Sessions are offered to AOC members for FREE (and to non-members for a minimal fee).
Local Lafayette photographer and visual artist Mike D. Smith will share his expertise on the essential skills you should know in conducting a professional photography shoot! Mike specializes in fashion photography and has shot for many high profile fashion campaigns and events including New Orleans Fashion Week and Acadiana Fashion Week (which he co-founded!) Get prepped on all the fundamental concepts from proper lighting and subject posing to optimal shot composition and camera settings!
Back by popular demand, New York Writer/Poet and Theater educator Robin Small-McCarthy returns to share her expertise on some effective voice techniques to deliver a convincing voice performance. Robin is a dynamic vocal coach and mentor who has dedicated the past 30+ years to teaching, directing and developing the performing arts in schools, universities, and community centers across the country. In this workshop, participants will focus on proper vocal control and mechanics through some interactive vocal exercises.
Learn and discuss the ins and outs of producing content for YouTube! Lafayette resident and family travel vlogger Lane Fournerat of The Travel Vlog Family has been creating and managing YouTube productions for the past 10 years, with his current YouTube channels totaling over 100,000+ subscribers combined! In this workshop, Lane will dissect the YouTube ecosystem, providing useful insight into how to grow and develop your channel as well as some advice for getting one started!
Performing Actor and Talented Theater instructor Bruce Coen will discuss some powerful techniques on how to communicate your authentic self whether on stage, on camera, or on the radio. Bruce has lived, studied, and performed in theater shows throughout California including musicals and Shakespeare. He has taught improv and acting workshops through UL's Potpourri program and directed multiple shows throughout the Acadiana community theater circuit. In this workshop, participants will be guided through some performance exercises to strengthen their character development and overall confidence in front of an audience.
At this orientation, discover the benefits of joining AOC, all that can be done at AOC, as well as how to successfully reserve use of AOC’s resources. A brief rundown of the studios, editing lab and portable equipment available is included in the orientation.
This free workshop is a pre-requisite to reserving any of AOC’s portable equipment or facilities. Pre-registration is highly encouraged.
Learn the basic elements of studio production in AOC's most basic studio including managing audio, live switching, creating graphics and more. This workshop certifies members to use AOC's TV Studio.
Learn how to record video and audio in the field. In this workshop, we cover basic camera and audio recording operation and beginner techniques. This workshop certifies members to use the following AOC gear: Orange Kit, GoPro and Zoom H4N recorder.
This is a beginner’s workshop introduces users to Final Cut Pro X, the most popular editing program used at AOC. Students will learn the main functions of Final Cut Pro X including trimming clips, adding text and audio, and exporting and submitting content for air. This workshop certifies members to use AOC's Computer Post Edit Lab computers.
This workshop covers how to produce an audio podcast from start to finish. We will discuss how to properly use audio recording software and equipment to produce mp3 files. We will also show you how to publish content online to your favorite podcast service. This workshop certifies members to use AOC's Radio Station/Podcast Studio.
In this workshop, users will learn the basics of recording audio using simple studio tools and a computer-recording interface. We will discuss two types of recording software, microphones, headphones and mixing. This class certifies members to use AOC's Audio Booth.
Learn how to write, produce, edit and share your media creations using one of AOC's Backpack Production Kits. These kits are an entire production house you can carry around in a backpack. Use it to create films, animations, podcasts, and more! This workshop certifies members to use AOC's Backpack Kit.
This workshop explains the fundamentals of animation and how these are used in Animate. Participants will learn the basic concepts of frame rates, key frames, sequences, and onion skinning.
Learn your way around Adobe's Illustrator by getting a basic overview of tools and functions. During this interactive workshop, students will create a basic illustration that will encourage them to create more!
Want to learn how to properly edit photos or even animate? Register for this workshop where we will help you master the tools used in digital photo editing and GIF creation.
This workshop covers advanced field production techniques and equipment. We'll teach you how to use our best gear and how to adequately plan for a safe field shoot. This workshop certifies members to use AOC's Blue Kit, Light Kit, Field Audio Kit, and Wireless Mic Kit.
Learn to use a full television studio including cameras, intercom systems, a green screen set, an eight-channel audio board and an advanced control room. We'll also teach you techniques for communicating as a crew and how to live stream your show on AOC's website. This workshop certifies members to use AOC's largest studio, the Multi-Purpose Room.
Learn advanced editing techniques using Apple's Final Cut Pro X Software. We strongly recommend you take our Basic Editing workshop before attending this class. This class is not for certification.
SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR SKILL BY LEADING A CLASS, WORKSHOP, or DEMONSTRATION AT YOUR COMMUNITY MEDIA CENTER!
Each Spring and Fall semester, AOC hosts a series of rotating workshops and events to educate the local community about digital media production. We are currently seeking creative, skilled session leaders to share their passion with a group of interested community members.
Sessions generally run 60 minutes to 90 minutes depending on attendance size and subject matter, and are conducted on weekday evenings (Saturdays possible):
AOC Lagniappe Workshops: A series of workshops, presentations and classes offered to AOC members (and non-members) that teach and develop media skills of all types. Popular topics include, but not limited to: Acting, Animation, Photography, Lighting, Voiceover, Podcasting, Special Effects Makeup, and Virtual Reality. 60-90 minutes. $50 per session.
AOC Teen MUSE Program: A free after-school teen program (for ages 12-17) that introduces local youth to various forms of art, media, and technology. Mondays, 4:30-6:00pm. 90 minutes. $75 per session.
